- Check Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice before travelling.
- Take out adequate travel insurance, including medical insurance.
Complete an E111 form at your local Post Office or Department of Social
Security, but be aware that the E111 does not cover all medical costs.
- Don't carry drugs. Penalties can be severe.
- Be aware that mugging, bag snatching and pick pocketing is common -
even in reputable hotels. Visitors should be extra vigilant in Brussels at
major railway stations, on the underground, buses and trams especially in
the vicinity of Rondpoint Schuman (EC quarter) and Gare du Midi. Antwerp,
Liege, Ostend and Bruges are less affected.
- Car jacking, especially of luxurious vehicles remains a constant risk.
- Do not leave valuables, ie handbags, mobile phones etc visible in your
car and keep car doors locked at all times. Keep belongings in a safe
place.
- Leave valuables and bank/credit card details in a secure place eg
hotel safe deposit
- Bring enough money for your stay.
- Only take a minimum about of cash, credit cards and personal ID when
you go out.
- For safety, leave a photocopy of your passport and your itinerary with
a contact in the UK. Enter next of kin details into the back of your
passport.
