    • Take out comprehensive travel insurance cover for medical expenses, accident to self and third parties; and unexpected loss of cash, credit cards, passport and luggage.

    • Before you travel, check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Travel Advice.

    • Make sure you have access to sufficient funds for the whole of your time in Fiji. If you are relying on ATM's you should note that not all accept internationally issued credit cards. ATM's are not common outside the main cities.

    • Keep your valuables, travellers' cheques and other important items in hotel safes where possible.

    • Be careful of sword-sellers. They carry small holdalls of tools and materials and will befriend obvious tourists, ask personal questions (names, country of origin etc). They will disappear briefly, only to reappear carrying crudely carved swords bearing your name and the names of your family. They will then attempt to charge you large amounts of money for an item of low value. Tell them, firmly, no and walk away, no matter how persistent they are.

    • Remember that there are important rules about SCUBA diving both before and after travelling by air.

    • Before you enter any Fijian village, you should seek permission from the village Chief. Do not take any photographs in the village without permission. Do not wear a hat or sunglasses while in the village.

    • Leave a photocopy of your passport and itinerary with someone in the UK. We recommend all visitors register with the British High Commission in Suva.

    • Beware of riptides along the reefs and other coastal areas. Anyone venturing out to the reefs or engaging in watersports should ensure they always wear the appropriate safety equipment. Stay well clear of the surf breaking over the reefs.

    • There is a departure tax of F$20 payable on departure. Foreign currency is not accepted.

    • Enter next of kin details into the back of your passport.

    • Don't buy drugs in Fiji. Possession of any amount of a prohibited drug, (including marijuana), results in a mandatory minimum three-month prison sentence.

    • NEVER go snorkelling or diving alone. Beware of sunburn when snorkelling - the sea is not an adequate sunscreen. The back of the neck and legs are particularly vulnerable.
